LEDs are more environmentally friendly than old incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lights, in that they don\u2019t contain any mercury and are more energy efficient.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to keep in mind while\ncomparing LEDs is that you need to look at the <em>lumens<\/em> and not\njust the wattage when selecting lights. While the number of watts an\nLED (or any other light) uses tells you about the power consumption,\nlumens tell you how much <em>light<\/em> it gives out. A standard 60W\nincandescent bulb gives out about 800-900 lumens, which you can get\nfrom an 8-10W LED bulb, or a 15-20W CFL. A standard tube light gives\nout about 2600-2700 lumens and consumes 28-40W. While LEDs are more\nexpensive than the rest, they last longer and the energy savings make\nup for the initial cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next thing you need to consider is\nhow many lumens you need (see illustration\/image). This will vary\nfrom room to room\u2014e.g., you may want brighter lights in a study\nroom. As a rule of thumb, you can target about 20-30 lumens per\nsquare foot (you can also use tube lights, 2600 lumens each, as a\nreference point). \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally, you need to look at the colour\u2014or rather, the colour temperature. Most LED packaging features terms such as \u2018Cool Daylight\u2019 and \u2018Warm White\u2019. Check the fine print for the specific colour temperature. This can range from 2700K, which is a warm, yellowish light, to 6500K, which is a bright white light.
